New way of spamming in blog comments - "Hello, i read your blog on occasion and i have a similar web log"

by Nishanth 13. July 2009 23:06

You have a blog and on one fine day a comment appears on one of your posts with most number of comments. it says:

"Hello, i read your blog on occasion and i have a similar web log and i was just wondering if you receive a ton of junk comments? If you do how do you control it, any plugin or anything you can advise? I get so much lately it's driving me mad so any help is very much appreciated."

If you think that this is a genuine call for help, you are mistaken, its a new way found by spammers to spread their links on the internet!!

If this text comes to you, just delete it... GoodBye spammers...

Here is a screenshot of this type of comment in my blog on which I did a Search(in google) and Destroy(Delete button)!!!

ChartDirector font problem with chinese/japanese/korean fonts

by Nishanth 12. May 2009 00:11

I was working on a web app which supported 20+ languages across the world. One report which we developed was using ChartDirector (http://www.advsofteng.com/gallery.html) in verdana font. After development we found that ChartDirector is not displaying chinese/japanese/korean characters. it was displaying  junk boxes instead. On Investigation, it was found that the issue was with  Verdana as Verdana does not support Unicode characters for japanese, chinese , korean etc. I searched in the net for a solution and found in the ChartDirector forum that the tech support of ChartDirector is advising people to use a font called "MingLiU" (which I don't think is free). I didn't like the idea of installing seperate fonts for each locale that we support. Just then I thought why don't we use a common unicode font which is available with Windows. This thought took me to "Arial Unicode MS" which is the best bet for displaying all unicode characters and it was free with Windows XP/ Windows 2003. I replaced verdana with "Arial Unicode MS" in the code and it worked perfectly!!!

sample code:     bc.xAxis().setLabelStyle("Arial Unicode MS", 9);

http://www.ajaxload.info/ - Cool site for custom ajax Indicators

by Nishanth 9. December 2008 23:35

I stumbled upon this site http://www.ajaxload.info/ which allows you to create custom Ajax indicators.

The concept itself is really cool. I can create the indicators using colors matching my site.

Check it out here: http://www.ajaxload.info/

New Car - Accent Executive

by Nishanth 22. November 2008 06:27

Last week I got my new car. Hyundai Accent Executive. Color is Champagne Silver.

Bought from Advaith Hyundai in Residency road, Bangalore.

The over all experience was nice compared to Trident Hyundai whom I approached first(I didnt like their behaviour. pathetic sales guys, I would say).

Accent Executive is the latest model from Hyundai and driving comfort is awesome in

the 94bhp,1496cc engine.

The feature list include:

  1. Beige interiors with designer beige seats
  2. Wood garnish, dual tone front panel
  3. Keyless entry
  4. Tilt steering
  5. Leather wrapped steering wheel & gear knob
  6. Central Locking
  7. Power window

Some instructions to first time buyers:

1. Do not take insurance from the car dealers. Usually insurance companies will offer us 20-30% discount for a new insurance which these dealers will not offer us.

2. Ask for a minimum 30% discount on accessories. They will give you for sure as the dealer margin on accessories is huge!

3. Buy only branded speakers and stereo system(preferrably one with usb port).

Gmail Forgotten attachment detector

by Nishanth 19. November 2008 22:24

Do u have the habit of sending an email saying "please see the attachment" and forget to attach the file?

Gmail Labs has the solution, After logging to Gmail -> Settings-> Labs.

Go down and find the Lab "Forgotten Attachment Detector" .

Google says "Prevents you from accidentally sending messages without the relevantattachments. Prompts you if you mention attaching a file, but forgot todo so." .

I tested this and it couldnt detect the mail with body . "please see the attachment" , but it was able to catch the sentence "I have attached a file".

May be in future google might come up with more  releiable mechanism to identify forgotten attachments. but its quite useful to enable this lab now.
